Strength in Voices: Truth in Student Experiences

The goal of this event, put on by the Nevada Education Research Alliance and the Middle Grades School Climate Alliance at REL West in conjunction with Washoe County School District, was to demonstrate and strengthen the use of student voice in district schools to improve student outcomes. The Strength in Student Voices event was structured to be participatory with adult educators and students co-presenting sessions, performing, and participating in activities together to learn about how student voice can support school improvement efforts.

As a result of this event, participants are now better prepared to use students’ ideas, perspectives, and experiences to inform policy and practice. Working together, educators and students determined how best to address school challenges.

The primary audiences for the event were high school students and Washoe County School District educators, as well as other invited state school and community leaders. Approximately 250 participants were expected. Participants were recruited by invitation from the district’s executive leaders.

Speakers included:

  • Paul La Marca, PhD., Washoe County School District

Panel 1:

  • Rechelle Murillo, MSW, Washoe County School District
  • 6 district high school students

Panel 2:

  • D’Lisa Crain, MA, Washoe County School District
  • 8 students and 8 educators from Hug High School, Washoe County School District
